Palakkad: The ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) is being plagued by charges of leaders promoting personality cult in one district and intense factionalism in another.
Top leaders like chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan lambasted these tendencies at district conferences at Palakkad and Pathanamthitta.
Vijayan, speaking at the Palakkad district conference, lashed out at the district leadership, pointing out that factionalism still prevails. He said the leadership should be ready to make corrections. Those who try to protect and promote personal interests will not be tolerated.
Criticism was raised against senior leader VS Achutanandan during the debate on the activities report presented by the district secretary. The criticism was sparked by the removal of the 'mandalam' secretary who was in charge of elections in Malampuzha, the constituency of VS.
'Idolizing' row in Pathanamthitta
Allegations of personal glorification of local leaders were raised at the CPM district convention in Pathanamthitta.
And the district secretary, K P Udayabhanu, was at the receiving end as Kodiyeri, reprimanded a delegate's eulogy of the local leader.
Kodiyeri expressed the doubt that the delegate was prompted to speak like that, and asserted that veneration of leaders will not be allowed in the CPM.
The chief minister was also under attack earlier in the conference. A section of leaders pointed out that Pinarayi should have reached the Ockhi-affected areas earlier than he did, which was almost four days tha disaster struck.
There was also widespread criticism and discontent on the increasing hold of the IPS officers on the police force.
