Thiruvananthapuram: It was a scary sight - a man struggling to stay afloat in a choppy and swollen sea by clinging on to a wooden plank, off the Andrews coast in Thiruvananthapuram.
He is believed to be one of the dozen fishermen from Thiruvananthapuram who were reported missing since Thursday morning. High-speed winds and heavy rain, triggered by Cyclone Ockhi, have been wreaking havoc along the coast since Thursday morning.
Around 6 am Friday, people spotted the man and altered the authorities. However, the authorities failed to respond to the SOS soon enough. The squally weather and tumultuous sea prevented the local people from rushing in to pull him out.
Sources said only the Indian Coast Guard or the Navy had the wherewithal to rescue people from such conditions. But they turned up only three hours after they were first informed even though the chief minister had said that the forces were on standby. The man was rescued by Friday evening.
Meanwhile, the sea continued to wreak havoc along the Thiruvanathapuram, Kochi, and Kollam coasts.
One of the missing boats (Christ) returned to Thiruvananthapuram coast Friday morning.
