Hadiya, alias Akhila, is a Kerala woman at the center of a religious conversion row. The 24-year-old woman had converted to Islam and married a Muslim, Shafin Jahan. However, the Kerala HC gave Hadiya's father KM Asokan her legal custody after annulling her marriage. Jahan then approached the SC.

Timeline

September 10, 2015: Procedures begin for Akhila's religious conversion, advocate makes affidavit

November, 2015: Parents get to know about daughter's religious conversion

January 1, 2016: She shifts residence, abandons her house to stay with friend

January 11, 2016: As per her father Asokhan's complaint, her friend's father Aboobacker is arrested

January 18, 2016: Hadiya appears in Kerala High Court after Asokan files Habeas Corpus petition

January 18, 2016: Hadiya refuses to go with her parents, court agrees to her plea to go for religious studies in SatyaSarani in Malappuram

August 26, 2016: Hadiya files affidavit that she converted to Islam on her own volition

December 19, 2016: She marries Kollam native Shafin Jahan

December 21, 2016: She appears in HC along with Jahan. HC refuses to accept the marriage and sends her to a hostel

May 24, 2017: HC declares Hadiya's marriage with Jahan as null and void, puts her in parents' protective custody

July 5, 2017: Jahan approaches SC against Kerala HC order

August 16, 2017: SC orders NIA probe into conversion row

October 3, 2017: SC poses important questions on the case, asks how can her father control the 24-year-old

October 30, 2017: SC directs Hadiya's father to produce her on the next date of hearing

November 21, 2017: Hadiya's father moves a fresh application in the top court seeking direction for audio and video recording of the hearing

November 23, 2017: The NIA submits a status report in a sealed cover to the Supreme Court in connection with the case

November 27, 2017: The Supreme Court sets Hadiya free from the custody of her parents and directs that she be allowed to complete her studies at a Salem homeopathy college
