Chennai: The national media awards jointly instituted by the Press Institute of India and the International Committee of the Red Cross were distributed on Friday. Malayala Manorama won two awards and The Week one.
Manorama chief reporter (Thiruvananthapuram) Mahesh Guptan won the first prize while the second prize went to T Ajeesh, chief sub editor (Malappuram). The prizes carry a purse of Rs 60,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively.
Mini Thomas, senior correspondent, The Week, won the third prize (Rs 25,000).
Mahesh won the award for a series titled 'Ardra Keralam' on the sufferings of mentally challenged children. A series on inspiring tales of wheelchair-bound people, titled 'Life on wheels' won Ajeesh the prize while Mini's feature 'Able to inspire' brought her the laurel.
The awards for photography were won by Himanshu Vyas, Raj K Raj and Kunal Pateel (all three belong to the Hindustan Times). Santhosh Babu, special cell officer to Tamil Nadu chief minister, gave away the prizes.
