Kochi: The Ernakulam principal district and sessions court, hearing the Jisha rape and murder case, has completed the cross-examination of the sole accused, Ameer ul-Islam, with the assistance of a bilingual expert.

The court, that had previously invited suggestions for translators to enable communication with the accused, an Assam native, wound up the process after getting 921 questions answered in two days.

The court had asked the accused questions based on scientific evidence, police findings and witness statements.

In the coming days, the witnesses from the defense side will be presented to the court by the advocate appearing for Ameer.

Jisha, a Dalit law student, was brutally raped and murdered in her house at Perumbavoor on April 28, 2016 between 5.30 and 6 pm. Her body, lying in a pool of blood, was found by her mother around 8 pm.

The police had picked up Ameer around 50 days later from Tamil Nadu, but only after media went into a frenzy at the brutal crime. The police confirmed Ameer's involvement in the murder after DNA tests proved positive.
