Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi kept his word: File photo

Thiruvananthapuram: Sharjah ruler and UAE supreme council member Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, who just wound up his state visit to Kerala has proven he is a man of his word.

Within no time of the ruler reaching his country, the government has released 149 prisoners imprisoned for over 3 years on petty offenses, including civil cases and minor economic offenses.

An amnesty declaration to the effect was earlier made at a joint declaration of the Sharjah ruler and the Kerala chief minister pinarayi Vijayan.

Sheikh Sultan had announced the plan to declare amnesty and allow the prisoners to continue to work in Sharjah in a speech delivered after receiving the honorary D Litt. conferred on him by the University of Calicut.

The 149 released Indian prisoners include several Keralites. The unconditional release has benefited prisoners on whom there are charges of financial misappropriation of even up to Rs 35.58 crore.

The amnesty does not cover prisoners arrested on criminal charges.
