Kannapuram (Kannur): In a bizarre incident, a family here unwittingly gave away 75 sovereigns of gold to a scrap dealer, and then miraculously got all of it back the next day.
The family, consisting of three females, has recently shifted to a new house in Pariyaram leaving behind many household items at the old house. One of the family members returned to their previous residence on Sunday evening and sold most of the discarded items to a scrap dealer.
After the man left, they noticed that seven gold bangles were missing. As a frantic search in and outside the house proved futile, the women, suspecting that the scrap dealer might have stolen the valuables, filed a complaint with the Kannapuram police with the help of one of their relatives.
Acting on the complaint, the police immediately searched the junkyard, and they were surprised to see several gold ornaments, weighing about 75 sovereigns, inside an old iron trunk which was among the goods sold to the scrap dealer. The cops also recovered Rs 40,000 in cash from the worn out trunk.
The metal container, used by the oldest member of the family to keep gold and cash away from thieves, had mistakenly ended up among discarded goods, the police said
