Munnar: The CPM’s problems with the office of the Devikulam subcollector seems unending as CPM local leaders were left red-faced when the new sub-collector V.R. Premkumar asked them to get out of his office Thursday. The CPM activists were on a fund raising drive, collecting money from the employees, when they were shown the door.

The incident took place at 12 noon Thursday. A band of 15 party activists led by CPM Idukki district committee member R. Easwaran and local committee secretary Joby John, walked into the subcollector's office with a bucket to collect fund for the construction of E.K. Nayanar Smaraka Academy, an academy in memory of the former Chief Minister and CPM leader E.K. Nayanar.

The subcollector's gunman Pramod, who was on duty at that time, stopped the CPM activists at the veranda of the office. He also informed them that he had strict orders from the subcollector V.R. Premkumar not to allow any fund collection during the office time. Irked at being stopped the party workers vent their ire and allegedly threatened him.

Following this, the CPM leaders insisted on meeting the subcollector; the gunman turned this down as well. The CPM workers lingered around for a while before dispersing and taking out a protest march in Devikulam.

The fundraising was undertaken at the direction of the CPM state committee. Denying entry to the subcollector's office was wrong, CPM leader R. Easwaran stated.

The subcollector was in his office when the gunman stopped the CPM workers. Premkumar replaced Sriram Venkitaraman as sub collector just two weeks ago.  Sriram’s stint as the subcollector was eventful with constant standoff with different political leaderships, including CPM, over issues of land grab.
