Chavara / Karukachal: Three members of a family in Kottayam were killed in a highway accident near Edapallykotta in Kollam on Sunday afternoon. The victims were on their way home after performing the final rites of their mother at Papanasam in Varkala.
A truck rammed the car, one of the three in which the 21-member group was traveling, around 3.20 pm. Apart from the fatalities, the accident also left three people injured, one of them in a critical state.
Karukachal natives N.D. Aravindakshan, 68; his sister Sarala, 62; and their nephew Anil Kumar, 49; died in different hospitals after being pulled out of the debris in a joint operation by the police, fire force, and the people. Anil's mother, Valsa Karunakaran, 72, who was also on the same car, sustained serious injuries. Aravindakshan's wife, Lalitha, 60; and Anil's wife, Rajani, 36; were also injured.
The family was returning from Varkala after performing the final rites of Aravindakshan's mother, Janaki Damodaran, who had passed away a couple of weeks ago at the age of 86.
The other two cars had already reached Mavelikkara when the occupants came to know of the tragedy. The accident stalled traffic for over an hour.
Aravindakshan, a mason, is survived by his wife, Lalitha, and children Rathish, Girish and daughter Girija. Anil was working in a workshop and is survived by three children - Akshaya, Aswin and Athulya.
