Kochi: The police here on Sunday took into custody a lawyer in connection with the actress attack case in which popular Malayalam actor Dileep has been arrested.

The police quizzed Raju Joseph, a junior of advocate Pratheesh Chacko, who has been absconding in the case, at the Aluva police club.

The police wanted to interrogate Chacko after the prime accused, Pulsar Suni, deposed that he had handed over the phone used to record the harassment of the actress to the lawyer. It was Chacko who represented Suni at the earlier stage of the case.

Chacko has moved an anticipatory bail plea in the Kerala High Court, which, however, made it clear that the lawyer cannot escape interrogation.

The police took Joseph into custody apparently to find out the hideout of Chacko.

Joseph's detention comes close on the heels of the actor deciding to seek bail from the high court a day after the Angamaly judicial first class magisterial court refused to grant him bail. He will be in judicial custody till July 25.

"We will move the high court for his bail tomorrow (Monday)," Dileep's counsel K. Ramkumar told PTI. He asserted that the actor had been framed in the case.

The police have been looking for the actor's manager Appunni also.

The police have claimed that the phone used by the prime accused to take a video of the assault on the actress reached Dileep through Chacko.

Probe into land grab

In another development, Kerala agriculture minister V.S. Sunil Kumar said a probe had been ordered into the alleged land grab by Dileep for building a multiplex at Chalakkudy in Thrissur district.

Dileep, lodged in Aluva sub jail, has been charged under various sections of the IPC.

The police said the conspiracy to abduct and assault the actress and film the dastardly act was hatched by Dileep and 'Pulsar' Suni, the prime accused in the case.

The police, in its remand application, had claimed that Dileep had developed a grudge against the actress for letting his then wife know about his alleged affairs and had hatched a conspiracy to take revenge way back in 2013.

The popular actress, who has worked in Tamil and Telugu films, was abducted and allegedly molested inside her car for two hours by the accused, who had forced their way into the vehicle on February 17 and later escaped in a busy area here.

Six people, including 'Pulsar' Suni, have been arrested in connection with the incident.
