Fairy tale gone awry: Wedding in police station, first night in lockup! Representative image

Ponnani: The lovebirds were not expecting something like this. A couple who eloped to be together predictably landed up in police custody. Unpredictably though, the police officers took the initiative to get them married right in the police station.

The Romeo from Thavanoor and Juliet from Ponnani would have lived happily ever after but for a small problem. The bridegroom had to spent his first night inside the lockup because the police had to file a case against him for attacking the cops in a bid to flee with his sweetheart.

The young couple had decided to leave their houses after their families refused to let them marry. They went to Wayanad where they were accompanied by a group of friends. The local police intercepted the group but the man gave them a miss. One of his friends was caught at Vythiri.

The Ponnani police eventually caught up with the couple and produced them before a court in Ponnani. The court let the couple go after the girl insisted that she wanted to live with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, a police team from Vythiri also reached the spot to claim custody of the man for attacking the cops.

Ponnani circle inspector Sunny Chacko arranged for the couple to get married in the police station before handing over the bridegroom to the Vythiri police. The newlywed man was produced in a court in the case and put up in the sub jail.
