Nedumkandam: Tamil Nadu officials are pressing for a survey of forest lands from Kumily to Chinnar with an eye to strengthen the state’s claim over the Mullaperiyar dam, revenue officials in Kerala said.
Tamil Nadu forest officials had gone on a recce in the area between Kumily and Bodimet several times over the last three months before holding talks with Kerala officials at the Cumbummet check post.
The dispute between the two states over the installation of a module container check post is set to escalate with Tamil Nadu’s demand for surveying and marking the inter-state border.
The border remains unmarked in most areas and Tamil Nadu wants to mark those areas.
If Kerala accedes to the demand, thousands of farmers who live on the fringes of forest may be affected.
Areas around Cumbummet witnessed tense moments on Sunday when Tamil Nadu officials examined farmlands in Kerala along the border around 10 am.
The Idukki district administration has asked the Tamil Nadu officials to halt work on the watch tower being built near the Pushpakandam border but the officials are yet to take action on it.
