Kochi: In keeping with the government's policy of inclusive development and gender equality, the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) has hired 23 transgender people for various jobs.
The new recruits will man ticket counters, parking areas and canteens besides doing housekeeping, gardening and estate upkeep jobs. The 23 transgenders would be part of the 530 Kudumbasree workers who had been roped in by the KMRL.
The workers, who had undergone job-relevant training, would be deployed on KMRL's 11 stations on the Aluva-Palarivattom corridor.
KMRL managing director Elias George had said KMRL was the first government-owned company in India to formally appoint transgenders. "I hope other firms in Kerala too give them a respectable opportunity to work," he said.
