Ernakulam: Panic gripped Kanjiramattam area in the district on Tuesday afternoon after a villager claimed of having seen a leopard near the Devi temple.

Locals have begun searches for the big cat. A rubber tapping worker said that he saw the leopard running away with a catch. The police and wildlife authorities too have joined in the searches.

Strengthening the villager's claim, the authorities have also spotted the pugmarks of the leopard near a pond in the area.

Earlier in March, a wild leopard had strayed into Kannur town and mauled at least four people before it was tranquilized by the forest officials.
