Kottayam: In a valiant attempt, two housewives chased and caught a conman in the heart of Kottayam town who tried to trick one of them by posing as her husband’s friend.
On Sunday morning, Ramya Prakash of Padinjarethil House, SH Mount, Kottayam, was approached by a well-dressed man who introduced himself as a colleague of her husband Prakash.
The accused, identified as Venugopal, of Thekkemadam, Kidangoor, told the woman that Prakash, who works in Saudi Arabia, had sent her a surprise gift through him.
He also demanded an amount of Rs 800 as service charge for the courier which he claimed had already reached Kottayam.
Ramya believed that her husband might have sent a gift to their child, whose birthday is on Monday, and went to her in-law Rakhi, who lives in the neighborhood, to borrow Rs 500 as she had only Rs 300 in her possession. She then gave the amount to Venugopal and tried to phone her husband but could not get through.
The accused fled the scene after taking the money. Soon, Prakash called Ramya and told her that he had not sent any gift. Realizing that Venugopal was a fraudster, both Ramya and Rakhi searched for him in the area, but to no avail.
In the evening, as they were on their way in a bus to attend the festival at the Thirunakkara temple, they spotted the accused near the beverage outlet at Nagampadam. They alighted from the bus and went straight to Venugopal. Upon seeing them, he tried to escape by running towards the bus terminal. The daring woman chased and caught him before handing him over to the police.
Venugopal will be produced before a local court on Monday, said the police.
