3,2,1,0...schools out! Yay, yay and yay!

Day 1 of the holidays

No jolting awake at night to check if the alarm has been set, no mental reviews of the contents of the refrigerator to figure if the ingredients of a school snack are in there, no early morning hunts for missing uniform bits, no wondering if it's open house for the middle school and sports for the seniors or the other way round. Two whole months of sheer bliss!

Day 7

What a week it's been! Love the summer break! Late nights and later mornings, movies and malls, friends and family... life is good. Absolute heaven to not have a schedule to stick to and not have a hundred reminders and to-do lists popping up on the phone all day. Could go on like this forever!

Day 14

What a fabulous holiday that was! Nothing beats a family holiday. So enjoyed our time together. Would have loved a longer trip though... a week was rather short to recover from all the effort of packing and shutting the house down. And maybe, next time a cooler place with no internet connectivity and no IPL telecasts would be a good idea.

Day 21

The refrain "I'm bored" is beginning to sound more often. Friends have left to visit grandparents and cousins are travelling as well. Must make some calls to inquire about 'enriching' summer activities for children.

Wonder when that summer camp starts? Perhaps it might have been a good idea to have opted for the three-week full day camp instead of the two-week half day one.

Day 35

Cricket camp - done, Swimming lessons - done, Overnight wilderness trek - done, Art and craft class - done, Theatre Workshop - done, Movement and dance lessons - done, Public speaking - done, Creative writing -done Music lessons- done , Cooking classes - done.

Gosh! The activity list has been run through. What next? There's still three weeks to go!

Day 42

The house is beginning to resemble a hotel. Meals a la carte. Housekeeping and laundry on demand, 24-hour check in and out... Need the location finder app to figure out where anyone is at any given time!

Marathon junior master chef viewing and a few cooking lessons attended have led to food being critiqued for being over done, underdone, over spiced, under spiced and for the biggest sin of them all...being repetitive.

Day 49

The fixed screen times negotiated at the start of summer have long since been abandoned. The TV drones on in one corner, music blares from another, regular pings from incoming messages on the phone add to the aural overdose. Digital devices of differing shapes, sizes and functions and in varying states of use lie scattered on couches, tables and even underfoot! Repeated reminders to check if school uniforms and shoes fit, books have been covered, school bags are in good repair go unheeded in the midst of this electronic blitz.

Nerves are getting frayed and tempers on edge. Every technique learned to keep calm and centred in the midst of chaos is being employed... pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, counting down etc.

Of all of these, it must be said that counting down has proved to be the most effective...
