Shalini Saraswathi

Shalini Saraswathi keeps running, and her runs are propelling a whole lot of people out of their dejected world.

The proverbial Phoenix, Saraswathi lost her limbs to a mysterious bout of infection during her pregnancy. The woman was not to be beaten down. She went for a pair of prosthetic legs and catapulted herself to the extraordinary world of blade runners.

Saraswathi had a comfortable life with her husband in Cambodia. The 32-year-old woman’s world came crashing down when she returned home on vacation. It started as a fever. An infection followed. Shalini’s pregnancy was aborted.

She was in for more shocks when the doctors told her that her legs and arms would have to be amputated in order to save her from the spreading infection.

“I had pink nail polish on my toenails when I went for the amputation surgery. I realized I will never be able to do that again. I also realized that my life was slipping away,” Saraswathi writes on a Facebook Page dedicated to the accounts of differently abled persons.

Saraswathi’s legs were amputated first. She lost her arms a few days later. She was dejected. Hope dawned gradually. She wanted to fight back and her family stood behind her like a rock.

It was not long before Saraswathi walked on prosthetic legs. She started running on the steel blades to keep her body weight under check. Then she switched gears.

She came across the sporting events meant for the differently abled. She trained hard and participated in each one of them, including the World 10K marathon organized by the TCS in Bengaluru recently.
