Kochi: 'Kizhakkambalam Twenty20,' a rural development initiative by the Kitex Group, has danced its way into the Guinness book of world records, by staging a mega Thiruvathirakkali with a participation of 6,582 artistes.
At an event held at Kitex Apparel Park grounds, Kizhakkambalam, on Monday, the team made history in just 16 minutes. Performers, aged 15-75, from 20 Indian states participated in the jumbo dance event.
The Guinness record was announced and handed over to Sabu Jacob, president and chief coordinator of team Twenty20, by Rishi Nath, adjudicator of Guinness World Record. “The record for the world’s largest Thiruvathira belongs to Twenty20 Kizhakkambalam,” Nath announced. “More than setting the world record, we hope this mega event will serve to bring together the people of Kerala and give a much-needed fillip to non- performing arts,” said Jacob.
A group of Thiruvathirakkali artistes trained by Malathy Menon, founder of Parvanendu school of Thiruvathira, Kochi, was delegated to different smaller groups to bring in uniformity in movements and steps. “This yields me an unexpected joy in this old age,” said 'Malathy teacher,' as she is widely addressed. “I dedicate this achievement to each of my students and the people they trained,” she added.
The event was organized in association with Chavara cultural center, Kochi. Former BJP president V. Muraleedharan was also present at the function.
Three generations danced together to set the record
For Indira, the Guinness Thiruvathira was more like a dream coming true. At 64, she danced with her daughter-in-law Nisha and grand daughter to set the record. “I have been a Thiruvathirakkali artiste right from my childhood. But I never expected I could ever stage it along with my daughter and grand daughter,” she said.
“It is indeed a moment of pride and glory,” said Nisha. “My daughter is 15 and she is could dance with her old grand mother for this event. Let the Almighty maintain mother's health and spirit,” she added.
Kizhakkambalam Twenty 20: a rural development model worth replicating
A charity outfit floated by the Anna-Kitex Group, Twenty 20 has made several headlines back in 2015 when they swept the assembly polls in civic poll results. A sustainable rural development project aimed to be accomplished by the year 2020, this volunteer group is supported by Anna Kitex Group, a 1,800 crore worth corporate company.
“100% housing in Kizhakkambalam village was our first mission, which we achieved last year. Complete access to drinking water and free internet, rubberized road network, poverty-free population etc are some other goals we almost achieved,” said Jacob.
Team Twenty-20 is planning to organize mega stagings of traditional Kerala dance forms every year. “It is all about engaging people all through the vacation and promoting our cultural values thereby,” he added.
