local-hero Shibhu and Gayathri

Kunnamangalam: From the clutches of a street circus team to an orphanage and then to a football field, is quite a quirky way for a girl to go. That’s exactly what happened to Gayathri, a kid from nowhere who went on to become the captain of the Ernakulam district school football team.

For the time being, the whistle has gone on her football matches and she has stepped into another match, one with a difference. As the ace footballer stepped into the field of life, with her friends raining blessings on her, the match she featured in on Sunday, was not for 90 minutes, but one for a lifetime. She had just become wife to Shibu, a young man with a noble heart!

Strange indeed are the ways of fate. Looking back on her life, Gayathri has only reasons to be happy. From the torture of a street circus gang to the safe haven of Jana Seva Sishu Bhavan in Aluva, life had come a full circle for her.

Born in Mysuru, Gayathri spent her early childhood with a street circus artiste. Her life took a turn when she escaped from the clutches of the circus nomads. The street circus had come to Cherthala and Gayathri too, along with her guardians. The girl fled and landed in Aluva, where she was found by auto drivers who took her to the Jana Seva Sishu Bhavan. Thus began a new chapter in her life. The young girl excelled in sports and the Jana Seva Sports Academy brought out the best in her. With equal ease she excelled in football, basketball and judo.

After her primary education in Little Flower UP School, Karumaloor, she went to St Joseph’s Girls High School in Karukutty from where she completed her high school studies. She shot into stardom when St Joseph’s emerged champs in the Subatro Mukherjee Cup football tournament in 2014. As captain of the team, Gayathri had every reason to be proud of her stellar performance. The same year, at the state football tournament held in Thodupuzha, she was chosen to lead the Ernakulam district football team.

Matrimony came calling when Gayathri, after completing her SSLC in 2016, was scouting around for vocational courses and was all set to join one. Providence stepped in when Shibu from Kunnamangalam, expressed his willingness to marry her. He had actually been looking around for a girl from a poor family when Gayathri came his way. They got engaged on November 21 at the Sishu Bhavan in Aluva and the wedding was held at A.M.UP School auditorium in Maakuttam.

Gayathri is the sixth girl from Jana Seva Sishu Bhavan to get married.
