Karukachal: It was a festival with a difference. There were no fireworks or feasts yet joy pervaded every heart.

The parishioners of the St Paul’s Orthodox Church at Nedumavu gave the annual extravaganza related to the church feast a miss as they diverted their contributions to build a house for one among the flock.

Thanks to the noble gesture, Alice and her two daughters have a roof over their head. The family was in dire straits after Alice’s husband died four years ago. Her neighbors and fellow parishioners came to her rescue and decided to celebrate the church feast in a truly Christian way.

The contributions from the churchgoers sufficed to buy five cents of land at Pothanpurath near Pampadi for Rs 3 lakh. The Pampadi Thirumeni Housing Program also contributed to the fund. A house with three rooms was built on the land at a cost of Rs 5.5 lakh.

Yuhanon Mar Dioscoros, the Metropolitan of the Kottayam Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, handed over the key to Alice and blessed her new home.

Fr Kuriakode Eapen Oolakkal, the parish priest, led the mission to build a home for Alice.
