Chimmony earth dam, an ambitious irrigation project, which had been a lifeline for Mukundapuram taluk of Thrissur, is dying a slow death due to deforestation and lack of rainfall. The dam, which once catered to a massive agricultural belt with fresh water, remains like a wasteland of barren hope on this World water day.
It is that time of the year when rivers narrow and water bodies dry up. The water level of Chimmony reservoir has dipped considerably to a historic low this time around.
This is not a mini pyramid but a bund-bridge, which marked the average water level of the reservoir.
Cracks in this river bed looks like an abstract art on nature’s fury.
Desert birds are now flocking in our forests.
Massive resource depletion and widespread deforestation have destroyed our water sources.
This is not just the case of Chimmony, but of all forest reserves across the country.
Today is March 22, World Water Day
Let's join hands to save the remaining forests, wildlife and water resources
