It’s a visual treat from outside and inside. That’s the house Prabhath and Dhanya are proud of today. The particular location in Koorali, near Ponkunnam, was chosen for its proximity to their respective workplaces. The beauty of the elevation lies in its wide frontage on a 12 cent rectangular piece of land. The only problem lay in the loose nature of the soil. As the first step in construction, the sides of a small canal nearby were paved and reinforced with granite. The plot was again filled with earth to strengthen the land.
The walls are all in solid concrete bricks. The doors and window shutters have been carved in teak wood and the window frames in anjili. Tiles on truss roof complete the look of the elevation. The single-storied house was built on a budget of Rs 45 lakh.
Exterior: The structure sits facing the north-east direction. From the road, you can get a view of three sides of the structure. That’s exactly why a lot of planning had to be done to make the house look comely. The exteriors in gray and white complement its design.
Sit-out: The sit-out is L-shaped. You can step right onto the car porch from here. The sit-out has been paved with granite in Lapatro-finish.
Living room: The highlight of the living room is the chic courtyard. Built according to Vaastu values, the owners were particular about a room for pooja. The courtyard was built to keep the pooja room away from the glare of visitors. Hence, it covers the prayer room. The walls of the courtyard have ample cuttings to let in fresh air.
Dining room: You are greeted by another courtyard as you step into the dining room from the living space. The top space, covered with glass lets in sunlight always. The family-living space arranged with sofas occupies a corner of the dining room.
Lighting: LEDs brighten up all the rooms. There are no fold ceilings. But small chipped-in niches on the ceiling hold the lights inside. Such a design allows light to spread evenly all around the room.
Bedroom: There are three bedrooms with attached bathrooms. The cupboards are in multi-wood and marine plywood. All the rooms have vitrified tiles for floor décor.
Windows: All the windows are four-paned. The window frames have a wooden base with glass on top.
Kitchen: The kitchen stands behind the dining room. The cupboards have been done in multi-wood and marine plywood. Facilities are in place in the kitchen for biogas cooking.
