Exterior Kunnumpurath House in Chengannur stands tall.

Kunnumpurath House in Chengannur stands tall. The structure, predominantly colonial in style, has all comforts built into it. The owners of the house, father-son duo Thomas and Tony, were in total sync with their plans for the house. Hence, it facilitated the construction.

Exterior: A structure, including the foundation, which stood earlier, was totally demolished. The land was then raised to level up with the road. Truss was laid over concrete. An old well on the plot was retained.

What catches the eye from outside are the two balconies on the front elevation. One set of columns on which a balcony stands has been finely decorated with claddings. The car porch does not form part of the house. The “kilivaathil” or dovecote windows in front add to the aesthetics of the elevation. The glass covering atop the main porch was a cost-cutting measure. The designer has seen to it that water from the monsoon rains flows into the well instead of going waste.

Living room Light streams in through the tiny windows.

Interior: Bright, airy and expansive - these were the requirements laid out. Light streams in through the tiny windows. Besides this, windows in different sizes ensure that the hall is always bright with natural lighting. The living and dining space set in double height keeps the area cool through the day and night. Since a lot of stress was laid on room space, there’s no clutter anywhere and one can move around without tripping over the furniture.

In fact, while designing the rooms, the owner had visualized the correct spot where each piece of furniture would go. The drawing room is on the left as one steps in through the main door. The common bathroom and the wash area are set on the other end of the main hall.

Staircase: The staircase has been set in a different style. Though the steps look like wood, they are in fact laid in concrete with wooden panels covering it. The handrail is of stainless steel. It’s the same design for the railings upstairs. A rectangular courtyard graces the space below the staircase.

Dining room The living and dining space set in double height keeps the area cool through the day and night.

Flooring: Ceramic floor tiles in wood finish complete the picture.

Kitchen: Though not luxurious on space, the kitchen has all conveniences built into it. Frosted glass on wood brightens up the place. The work area has a smokeless oven. There’s one more room, and a bathroom close to the kitchen.

Bedrooms: There are four bath-attached bedrooms, two up and two down with dressing areas in all the rooms.
