When designer Faisal Nirman sat down to sketch a house on a 20-cent plot in Chalakudy, the concepts he wanted to concentrate were elevation and interiors.
But then, the Kerala weather came as the decisive factor. Finally, he opted for a tropical structure even as he worked on a stunning elevation.
The end-product, the 3,300 sq ft house, looks out of the world, drawing admiring stares from passersby.
The owner, Subash, lives in Singapore with his family. He zips down to his magnificent house for only a couple of times a year to be with his parents who live here.
With its strict adherence to the principles of Vaastu, the house had the added blessings and instructions from renowned astrologer Kannipayoor, whose tips helped the designer craft out the structure.
The house has four bedrooms with attached bathrooms in addition to a living space, dining room, kitchen, and courtyard. The clay tiles spread on the roofs enhance the look of the house.
Maximizing the available space was apparently the designer’s main concern. The sit-out is shaped after an L. A small courtyard connects the living and dining sections. The custom-made furniture in the living room looks extremely chic. Highlighting the living room pieces are the wood-shaded tiles. The same tiles have been laid out in other parts of the house. The indirect lighting in the living room adds a touch of the surreal and heightens the ambiance of the space.
The dining area is simple and minimal in furnishing. An eight-seater dining table, fold ceiling and theme lighting make the place look extra special. A sun-slit atop the double-height ceiling brightens the floors upstairs.
The insides, though spacious and expansive, maintain their privacy. A small courtyard separates two bedrooms, which open out into the dining area. The courtyard with its palms, potted plants and small swing bring in a patch of greenery indoors.
The wide and winding stairway, in 75 percent carved style, is the highlight of the main living room. Crafted in metal and wood, the steps made of wood in combination with the frosted glass give it a rich and royal look. Stainless steel and wooden handrails complete the stairway, an entity in itself.
A veranda and a door have been provided behind the stairway. A small family living space upstairs acts as a piece of the private patch where the family enjoys some private time.
All the bedrooms have been provided with inbuilt wardrobes. The paneling on the master bedroom wall looks attractive. The kitchen sits on the northeast side and has a work area built into it.
The garden has been dressed well with interlocking tiles, Kota stone, and grass.
Today, the designer and the owner are two extremely happy men. A dream house, which one man visualized was brought to life by another who worked his expertise on it.
