Kathakali has been in the news for its final sequence that raised red flags at the censor board. The movie is a treat to watch, if the title song is any indication.

The song, written by Nasil and composed by Bijibal, has been released by Manorama Online. The song, which narrates the slow death of the Bharatapuzha River at the hands of the men it nurtured, strikes a chord with its lyrical beauty and melody. Bijibal’s recitation elevates the poetry to another dimension.

The movie, directed by Oscar Saijo Kannanaikkal, portrays the intertwined destinies of the people who live by the fast-drying river. The Central Board of Film Certification officials had initially rejected permission to screen the movie, taking offense of a scene where the protagonist removes his Kathakali attire and proceeds to the river, stark naked. The Kerala High Court later allowed the movie’s release.

The movie, which lasts about two hours, features Binoy Nambala and Irena Jocoby. The feature is produced by All Is Well, a collective of differently abled persons, and Pavaratti People’s Movie Platform.
