Ever since the teaser of Si3 aka Singam 3 hit the internet with a bang in November 2016, Suriya fans all over the world have been eagerly waiting for the film.
The wait will soon be over as the third installment in the popular Singam franchise is finally up for release after being rescheduled for a couple of times. Written and directed by Hari, the action thriller also stars Shruti Haasan and Anushka Shetty.
In a free-wheeling chat, the director talks about his latest offering which will hit the screens on February 9.
What is special about Singam 3?
There are many Indian movies that have inspired two or more sequels. But in Tamil cinema’s history, two sequels, connecting with the original story and featuring the same hero, is a first. In S3 too, we have retained much of the original cast and characters. I couldn’t find something similar in Indian cinema’s history. I hope the success of S3 will inspire more young directors to try their hands at sequels.
Was it a premeditated decision to make the third part?
Not at all. The first film ended with the punchline that read - “The hunt will go on.” Honestly, while phrasing that line, a sequel to the film was the last thing on our mind. But, after the huge success of the movie, many prodded me to do the second part. Though it also went on to become a big hit, we had no plan to make another sequel. But after S2, the fans and the mediapersons had only one thing to ask whenever they met me: When are you going to make Singam 3!
In fact, in the meantime, I had discussed another story with Suriya.
When we were into the third round of discussions, I told him the story thread of Singam 3, which he liked instantly. Even the one-liner was not ready at that time, but he promised that it would be his next project with me. It took me so many months to write the full script, but he patiently waited till I completed it.
What would be the biggest challenge for S3?
Suriya has already donned Khaki in three of my movies: Saamy, Singam and Singam 2. He has also played a cop in Kaakha Kaakha. Audience will come in to watch S3 expecting something bigger and better. Meeting that expectations will be the biggest challenge for the film.
How different is Suriya’s Durai Singam character in S3 from the other two films?
In the previous films, Suriya appeared in police uniform in almost all the scenes. But in S3, he will be seen in casual and stylish attires as well. Durai Singam is an international investigative officer now, that’s why he is being labeled as the ‘Universal Cop’. He has also become more matured and energetic!
Can you tell us about the central theme of S3?
The film takes a peek into various issues confronting the common man in his day-to-day life. The story revolves around a case involving an international network and the efforts of Indian police force to crack it. The filming started in Andhra before we traveled to various exotic locations in Australia, Georgia, Romania, Singapore to shoot many of the film’s key portions.
The fans will get to see Suriya in a new avatar. His looks, mannerism, dialogue delivery, performance in action scenes.. everything will be different in S3. It will be a fast-paced, technically sound movie with all the right ingredients to satisfy viewers. Trust me, it will also be a clean entertainer and an ideal family watch.
