Thiruvananthapuram: When an entire state seems to be baying for Dileep’s blood, the actor’s organized fans are trying to put up a meek defense. The Dileep Fans’ Association insists that the arrest of the actor in connection with the attack on an actress was part of a conspiracy, a theme the actor’s family and well-wishers have been harping on since Monday.

Dileep is accused of hiring a group of thugs to torture the actress and videotape her suffering. The goons, led by Sunil Kumar aka ‘Pulsar’ Suni, waylaid the actress on a highway near Angamaly and tormented her inside her car on February 17.

Suni was caught within a week and eventually lost his nerve in prison, leading the police to Dileep. The powerful actor suddenly found himself alone amid an angry crowd, with friends and colleagues taking a U-turn and denouncing him.

Actors who had previously tried to defend Dileep chose to remain silent in the face of the public rage but a few brave souls dared to warn about a witch hunt.

Dileep Fans Association state president Riyaz denied reports that the association has been disbanded. “I know him, I trust him, I support him,” reads a tagline on the profile picture of the association on Facebook.

The Facebook page called ‘Dileep Fans Club’ has been pumping out posts in favor of the embattled the actor. The guilty should be punished but no one should be humiliated before a court pronounces him guilty, one of the posts read.

Dileep’s brother Anoop said that the actor has been trapped in the case. “Dileep did not conspire against anyone. It was a conspiracy against Dileep. I do not want to name anyone,” he said.

He added that Dileep had not confessed before the police.

The initial hate wave against Dileep seemed to subside with several celebrities mellowing their comments about the actor.

The younger stars in Malayalam had forced the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) to expel Dileep soon after his arrest.

Actor Asif Ali even said he would never act with Dileep again. On Thursday, however, the young actor said he said that because he ‘found it difficult to face Dileep now”. Ali even termed Dileep a well-wisher.

Dileep also found unexpected support from outside the cinema filed. Maverick legislator P C George said that the people would have to repent their mistreatment of the actor. The MLA from Poonjar said Dileep was innocent and sought to defame his former wife.

Former cricketer and wannabe actor S Sreesanth also called for a halt in the tirade against Dileep. Sreesanth, who was banned from the IPL following a match-fixing scandal, said that Dileep should be spared the cross of public anger as the charges against him are yet to be proved. He added that he was saying this from his own experience.
