Student gives a leg up to lighten schoolbag burden, wins award Rohith, a plus-two science student at A V Higher Secondary School, Ponnani, designed a gadget to carry schoolbags, which brought him the A P J Abdul Kalam Ignite Award.

Ponnani: Lugging heavy bags with books, lunch, water bottle and what not to school and back home is a nightmare for every student. Now, a schoolboy from Kerala has found a solution to the problem and earned national recognition for his effort. Rohith, a plus-two science student at A V Higher Secondary School, Ponnani, has designed a gadget to carry schoolbags, which brought him the A P J Abdul Kalam Ignite Award.

The gadget, named 'Leg for backpack', comprises two 'legs' with wheels and a stand to keep the schoolbag. The gadget, which can be attached to the waist, takes the weight off the schoolbag and makes trips to school a pleasant experience.

Rohith's 'Leg for backpack' was among the 29 winners of the Ignite awards which were recently presented by former president Pranab Mukherjee. About 65,000 students from around the country had submitted their projects for the awards.

Rohith is the son of Mohandas, residing at Sivadam, Kalarickal, in Edappal.
