Velvety green paddy fields

The lush green paddy fields is a characteristic feature of rural Kerala. Well supported by the two monsoons that lash over the state, paddy cultivation still thrives in certain pockets of Alapuzha district. Despite lying below the sea level, Kuttand is indeed the rice bowl of Kerala. Paddy fields are all protected effectively from the surrounding waterways by specially designed ring bunds.
Tourists are enchanted by the vast velvety green stretches of paddy. The green hue gives way to a golden shade, during the month of September as the rice grain ripens and the paddy chaffs bow down their heads with weight.
The agricultural practices that prevail in Kuttand, the granary of Kerala, are unique in nature. Accompanied by rhythmic folk songs that are sung by farmers at the time of harvest, the sight of paddy fields extending beyond the horizon is a sight worth seeing.
